I would like to share with you two one act plays I wrote dealing with where we can experience God in our world. The first play is called "Parable of Suffering" and takes up the question of why God allow people to suffer? The book "When Bad Things Happen to Good People" by Harold S. Kushner & "The Wounded Healer" by Henri Nouwen may assist you in coming into some answers for yourself.
The second play "No Longer Blue" is a "francis like" character that finds God in the midst of street people and is loosely based on the book "Mr Blue" by Francis Conelly.
Some other books I found helpful are:
"A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle
"A Return to Love" by Marianne Williamson
"A Spirituality Named Compassion" by Mathew Fox
"Embodiment" by James R. Nelson
